Obituary for Richard David Shiels

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard David Shiels in Porcupine Plain, Saskatchewan, on February 19, 2024.

Richard was born on June 21, 1947 in North Battleford, Saskatchewan to parents Raymond and Gladys Shiels (Moen).

Richard started his life in Steen, Saskatchewan, later moving to Tisdale, Saskatchewan with his family where he started his schooling. The family then moved to Prince George, BC, where he lived until he was 12 years of age. After his dad’s death in 1960, Richard returned to Saskatchewan to live with his Grandpa and Grandma Shiels on their farm near Bjorkdale, where he attended school. In later years, he attained his GED.

On January 27, 1968, Richard married Victoria Bergman and together the couple was blessed with a daughter, Laurie, and a few years later, a son, Clayton.

Richard worked for the Department of Highways, Potts Construction, Hudje Construction, Graham Forbes Construction, Bradshaw Construction, and Clarence Deasing Construction, among others.

Richard was a member of the Chelan Curling Club, the Carragana Bow Club, and the Mistatim Fish and Game Club.

In his spare time, Richard enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, and camping, as well as playing guitar, banjo, accordion, mouth organ, and organ.

Richard was predeceased by his father, Raymond Shiels; mother, Gladys Shiels (Moen); Grandparents, Robert Shiels and Alice Shiels (Baker); Grandparents, Andrew Moen and Margaret Moen; son, Clayton Shiels; father-in-law, Hilding Bergman; mother-in-law, Hilda Bergman (Johnson); brother-in-law, Adolph Bergman; and sister-in-law, Lillian Bergman (Chapman).

Left to mourn Richard’s memory are his wife Victoria; his daughter Laurie Snider (Shiels); son-in-law, Les Snider; granddaughter, Larissa Snider; grandson, Lairn Snider; sister, Madeline Pruden (Shiels); brother-in-law, Lester Pruden; sister, Roberta Boylan (Shiels); brother-in-law, Bruce Boylan; brother, Dwain Shiels; sister-in-law, Amy Shiels (Bodenham); sister-in-law, Deloris Gulka (Bergman); along with many nieces and nephews.
