At the age of 3 the family made the move to a farm near Winnipegosis, Manitoba. She enjoyed growing up on the farm, as she shared the many experiences she had gardening, knitting, cooking, baking, sewing and raising farm animals. When Nellie was 16 years old her father died and she stayed on the farm to help her mother. At l8 she moved to Winnipeg and worked at various jobs which included: working as a seamstress at a sewing factory. Sewing became a passion for Nellie as she made her own clothes and clothes for others. Nellie married Paul Smud on November 7, 1953 in Levack, Ontario where two of her children were born Walter and Kathy. In 1958 they moved to Fork River, Manitoba where they had their third child Gordon. In l963 they moved and purchased a country store north of Stenen, SK. Nellie operated the store while Paul worked away from home. After operating the store for a few years, Paul got a job at Simpson Timber in Hudson Bay, SK. In l969 they sold the store and moved the family to Hudson Bay. Nellie worked at many different occupations: she was at waitress, store/owner manager, store clerk, seamstress and cook. Every job she had she was very dedicated and was enjoyed by her co-workers. Nellie enjoyed gardening, loved having violets in her house, painting, quilting, bowling, fishing, playing cards, board games, berry picking and watching the Blue Jays play baseball. Most of all Nellie enjoyed her grandchildren, especially watching them participate in sporting activities. Nellie was a great influence for her grandchildren providing them with a welcoming place to go with delicious food. She loved seeing her great grandsons and enjoyed facetiming them. Nellie was known for her delicious home cooked food. She loved cooking with her grand children. When asked how to make her delicious soup her advice was to "just taste it" and when making bread or buns was "just feel the dough". Nellie enjoyed having company and visiting. She will be remembered for being smart witted and bringing a smile to everyone.
