Obituary for John "Jim" James Fittes

John James "Jim" Fittes was born on April 18, 1934 on the homestead in the High Tor district to Dave and Margaret Fittes. Jim received his education at the High Tor School, on the days he didn't hide in the hay rack.
Jim had not much use for schooling so he headed west to Kamloops BC to work in a lumber yard. After 3 years in BC he returned home to High Tor to farm, and work as an equipment operator with E.V. Lanning. Jim met Marilyn through mutual friends at a dance, the rest they say is history and they were married in 1961 at the Legion Hall in Porcupine Plain, SK.
Jim and Marilyn raised a family of two girls; Debbie and Donna. They lived in a home proudly built by Jim in 1966 just east of the High Tor Hall. The family operated a mixed farm with grain and livestock until 1987. After leaving the farm they moved into Porcupine Plain where they reside presently.
Jim worked as a Landscaper, maintenance man, handyman, worked at the stockyards, and operated heavy equipment. Out of all of his roles, his favorite was being the caretaker at the arena; he enjoyed the kids, families and took pride in skate sharpening and having an impeccable ice surface for both the figure skaters and the hockey players! He even ensured a safe ride home for the kids who wanted to skate until the lights were turned off.
Jim enjoyed his horses, woodworking, watching the chuck wagons, chariots and the time spent cutting grass and rototilling. He spent much of his summer cutting grass and trimming at local cemeteries and years back when he had his heart surgery, Debbie and the kids offered to take care of the Hillcrest cemetery for him and they still joke to this day that it took all 5 of them to complete the job it took Jim one day to do! He never passed up an opportunity to have coffee and a visit with a good friend and loved it when people popped in!
Jim is predeceased by his mother Margaret; father Dave; daughter Donna; sisters: Ruth and Frances; brothers: Andy and Stewart; brothers-in-law: Clayton Hoffus, Albert Tower and Lavern Melland; and son-in-law David Johnson.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn; daughter Debbie Johnson (George Martin); grandchildren: Chris (Melanie) Johnson and Kim (Jaz) Greupner; his siblings: George (Fran) Fittes, Clara Hoffus and Kathleen Melland; sisters-in-law: Olive Fettis and Mattie Fettis; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
