Obituary for Daniel "Dan" Wickware Young

Dan was born on the farm at Kinistino, SK on July 11, 1926. He attended Gowanbrae School until Grade 10. He then went to work on the farm at home. He spent six winters riding a boxcar to work in bush camps near Port Arthur and Fort William, ON. He drove a team of horses in the pulp industry. He used his wages to put the crop in at home. One of his fondest memories was riding a boxcar to Toronto from Kinistino to help fit cattle for the Toronto Royal Fair. He also worked in the bush at Prince George, BC. In 1954 he married Alma Lima. Three children were born to this union, Bryce, Ardith & Neil. Alma passed away in 1962.
In 1963, he married Lillian Eberle who had 2 children Larry & Sharon. They milked cows, raised pigs and farmed in the Weldon area until he accepted a Community Pastures Manager position at Bertwell in 1968. He retired from that position in 1991. They moved 1½ miles north of the pasture after purchasing a quarter of land and setting up a yard. They continued raising cattle and breeding horses. Lillian passed away in 1996.
In 1998 he married Violet Boe, a prior neighbor from Weldon. They continued living and working on the farm until 2008 when they moved into Churchill apartments in Hudson Bay.
Dan was active in the 4H. He founded the Dusty Spurs 4H club in Weldon and the Weekes Wranglers after moving here. He was involved with the Shand Ag Society for many years. He drove school bus, belonged to Weekes Elks. He enjoyed training and driving his team of horses at community functions. He helped build the Weekes Skating Arena. He attended many Christmas concerts dressed in red. He was always willing to lend a hand to whoever needed.
