Obituary for Genevieve Mary Jones (Murphy)

Genevieve Mary Jones was born on May 6, 1927 to John and Irene Murphy at Grand Falls, Newfoundland. The eldest of 15 children.
On October 13, 1942, at the age of 15, she left home with her younger sister Bridgett to work as housekeepers in Nova Scotia. She missed the train and subsequently missed the ferry to the mainland. That night in the wee hours of October 14, the SS Caribou passenger ferry on its way to Sydney, Nova Scotia was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat. She always felt blessed to have missed that train. Perhaps that’s why she always calmly would say, “The good Lord will take me when he is ready and not before”. In 1944, she moved to Montreal and worked as a housekeeper while also going to school for hairdressing. In 1955, Gen married Jerry Paul and moved to Chelan, Saskatchewan.
Gen worked at the Chelan Hotel and was a clerk at the Robinson’s store, and later worked as a waitress at the beach café at Greenwater Lake.
Gen’s marriage to Jerry Paul failed in 1978. In 1982, she met Sidney Jones and they were married in December of 1990. When Sid became ill with kidney failure Gen stayed by him and cared for him doing home dialysis. She devoted herself to his care until his death in 1991. Gen was very proud of her new family, and told anyone who would listen of the antics and accomplishments of her grandchildren.
She was active in Alanon, the Hospital Auxiliary, the AUCW, and Somme Legion # 4 until she fell ill to lung cancer in 2007, after which she then lived at home with the help of her family, friends, Homecare, and Meals on Wheels.
Anyone who knew Gen knows how independent and stubborn she could be. I’m sure we all have a story about that, but she was also a very caring and giving person. Her brother Bill tells a story of when Gen and her sister left home, she gave her coat to Bride (Bridgett) as she didn’t have one and Gen went without. Over the years she would send special packages to her mother to help out. She didn’t make many trips home after she came to Saskatchewan, but when she did she always came home with fond stories of her family, and of course the Newfoundland accent that was never far away and best of all salt beef for Newfoundland dinner.
Gen was predeceased by her husband Sid Jones, her mother and father John and Irene Murphy, sisters: Bridgett, Mary, Bernice and Pauline, and her brothers: Jack, John and Tom.
She leaves behind her step children: Art (Barb) Jones, Glen (Carol) Jones, Carol (Bryon) Larwood, and Reg Jones, 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, sisters and brothers: Madeline (Paul) Fitzgerald, Ted (Clara) Murphy, Margaret (John) Revard, Irene (Bill) Laughlyn, Bill (Pauline) Murphy, Cathy (Joe) Maloney, and Dennis (Belinda) Murphy, and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
