Obituary for Jean Darmokid (Martyn)

Jean Darmokid was born August 25, 1933, on the farm near Chelan. Jean was the 7th of 9 children born to Polly and Andrew Martyn. Jean attended school in Chelan until grade 8. At the age of 16, Jean took the train from Chelan to Melfort. She worked in the Café and stayed at the Rooming House. She worked through the winter then returned home to help on the family farm. She then met her husband, Joe Darmokid, while he was working for her brother, Raymond. Joe and Jean moved to Prince Albert where they got married on March 15th, 1952. In P.A. Jean worked at the P.O. Café. In 1957, they moved to Lady Smith, B.C. and then to Burnaby. Joe and Jean stayed in B.C. for 3 years, then returned to Saskatchewan to farm. After a year on the farm near Pre-Ste Marie, Jean and Joe moved to the Martyn Homestead where they raised their five children: Joan, Josie, Janice, June, and John.
Jean lived a very full and rewarding life on the farm. Together Jean and Joe raised cattle and chickens, farmed, and grew a huge garden. Jean loved her garden and took great pride in it. She was a hard worker, on and off the farm. She worked on a threshing crew, as server and as a cook for a company building the road to Hudson Bay. She also worked at the Honey Plant and then at the Red Deer Nursing Home, as head cook, for over 20 years. Even after a long day's work, Jean would come home to prepare meals and help on the farm. Jean was an amazing cook. She was often busy canning or making perogies and cabbage rolls. Jean always had time to be a gracious host to anyone who stopped by her home, on the farm or in town. There was no lack of food or drinks when sitting around Jean’s table.
Jean enjoyed fishing, mushroom picking and hunting with her husband, Joe. They also enjoyed traveling and took many trips to B.C. and the United States. Jean and Joe welcomed everyone into their home and enjoyed going out to visit family and friends.
Jean put many miles on her car crop checking. She loved to take drives out to the farm to help out, bring food, or have a little visit.
Jean was the pillar of the family that kept us very close. She was very proud of her kids and grandkids. She looked forward to family gatherings. Although her house was small there was always room for one more. Jean was a kind and caring person who opened her heart to everyone she met. Jean will be missed dearly by all.
Jean was predeceased by her husband, Joe, grandson Colton, brothers (Raymond, Bert, and Marvin) and sisters (Mary, and Anne).
