Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Horvath (Stonehouse)

Horvath, Mary Elizabeth nee Stonehouse passed away, aged 86, on December 31st, 2022 in Tisdale Union Hospital, surrounded by her family.

Mary was born on September 28, 1936 in the Arborfield area and moved to the Prairie River area to work in 1952. Her parents moved to farm along Highway #3 in 1954. She met John Horvath at a dance, and they were married on June 27, 1955. The couple lived with John’s parents in the Muskeegan area before moving in 1958/9 to the home farm in the Prairie River area where they raised their seven children. Mary settled into raising their family and milking the cows, feeding the pigs, looking after the chickens, and caring for the yard.

John was playing music in his spare time, and in 1971 Mary and the children joined him and the “Horvath Family” band was formed playing at rodeos, weddings, benefit dances, social functions and church services. The Family recorded two records in the 1970’s. After winding up the logging business, John and Mary eventually retired to live in Porcupine Plain. Mary and John were married for 58 years. After John died, Mary continued playing music in retirement homes and at special events. She loved to listen to country and gospel music, crochet, watch the birds at her bird feeders, and feeding the neighbourhood cats!

Her greatest joy was her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and their spouses, whose pictures were displayed with pride around the house. She will be greatly missed by them all but she has left precious memories for them to cherish.

Mary is survived by her seven children, Debra (Neal) Mathers, John (Betty) Horvath, Ellen (Blair) Kulyk, Margaret (the late Garth) Langdon, Reginald (Caroline) Horvath, Denise (Yvon) Jasmin, Dennis (Trinity) Horvath, and by her 20 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, George (Velma) Stonehouse, Shirley Tuleta, Pearl (Steve) Shuflada,Harold (Carol) Stonehouse, Ronald (Cathy) Stonehouse, and brother-in-law Marvin.

Mary was predeceased by her parents Harold and Elizabeth Stonehouse, husband John Horvath, son-in-law Garth Langdon, brother Earl Stonehouse, sister Elizabeth (Marvin) Gurbach, and friend Looi Bourgonje.
