Obituary for Hazel Leson

Hazel Leson
Hazel Leson (Choboter) passed away peacefully on May 22, 2021. Hazel was born on November 9, 1931 on her family farm near Buchanan, Saskatchewan to Peter and Bella Choboter. She grew up on the family farm, always lending a helping hand to her parents and younger siblings. She attended the country school in Pohorlowitz in the Sheho Rural District, accomplishing her grade 10 and moving on to the working field. Hazel worked on a local farm while going to school to gain her housekeeping training. She then moved to Canora where she worked as a waitress. When an opportunity arose at the Canora Union Hospital, Hazel began her career as a nurses’ aide. Hazel’s good nature and willingness to help others in need served her well during her time at the hospital.
Hazel then met the love of her life, Henry. The couple met at a wedding in Canora in 1954, where Hazel was a bridesmaid and Henry was the best man. They also played together in the Canora band; Henry on the trumpet and Hazel on the French horn. A romance blossomed and they were married on July 12, 1955. They had 3 children, Stuart, Timothy, and Beverley. The family moved to Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan in 1959. In addition to raising her children, Hazel worked at the Post Review newspaper, cooked at the Mohyla student residence in Saskatoon, and also managed the kitchens for the Hudson Bay Golf Club and Curling Club. She was a member of the Hudson Bay Figure Skating Club executive for a number of years. Most notably, Hazel was an enthusiastic member of the Ukrainian Ladies Church organiza-tion. She enjoyed countless hours pinching perogies and rolling cabbage rolls with her best friends.
Hazel enjoyed gardening, cooking, watching all sports on TV, listening to music, dancing, and going for tea and ice cream with her friends. She also loved the outdoors, including camping and fishing. She loved visits with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. It would be impossible to list all the wonderful Ukrainian dishes that Baba would cook when she knew the kids were coming for a visit.
Hazel is predeceased by her husband, Henry, and her parents, Peter and Bella. Also, by her brothers, Wilbert, Baby Lawrence, and Baby Edwin; sister, Olga; brothers-in-law, John Harcoult, Bernard, John Baulin, and Dave, and sister-in-law, Verna.
Hazel is survived by her children, Stuart (Kathy), Timothy (Marlyn), and Beverley (Fred); her siblings and siblings-in-law Mary, Vicki, Alec (Margaret), Ivan, Ruth, Edward (Patricia), Sonya (Bill), and Olga; her grandchildren Tyler, Brandan (Shannon), Lorissa (Jesse), Derek (Lin), Sharisse, Corey (Brandi), Amy (Michael), Vanessa, and Stacy; great-grandchildren Annabella, Vaeda, Theodore, Vivian, Fallon, and Davyn, along with many other nieces, nephews, family and friends.
