Obituary for Bohdan "Bert " Denys

Bohdan "Bert " Denys
BERT DENYS
November 28, 1928 - March 17, 2021

Bert was born, "Bohdan" in Kelvington, Sask to Wassil (Bill) and Katherine Denys. When he was a Toddler, his Dad moved his wife and family to their homestead, northeast of Chelan. As a boy, he attended Tall Poplar School, then later school in Chelan. As a young man, he worked many types labour jobs. He spoke of working away with his brother Raymond in the bush, cutting cordwood.
On August 28, 1954, Bert married Lillian Langdon. The young couple resided in Calgary. Bert worked for Palm Dairies as a Mechanics Foreman. Bert and Lillian welcomed their eldest son, Steven James, on November 26, 1955. Bert continued to work hard at Palm Dairies. He often worked weekends and always tried to make extra income for his family wherever possible. In 1958, Bert and Lillian welcomed their second son Mark Stewart on March 20.
As a young couple with two small boys, Bert and Lillian decided the city wasn't the place to raise their family. So, Bert packed up his family in 1960 and moved back to the Chelan area.
Upon his return, Bert purchased Farmland. Being a Farmer wasn't enough for him. He was also an Entrepreneur. He purchased a Gravel Truck, a Pit and started "Bert's Sand and Gravel". He was a very hard worker and found boredom very easily. Bert was happiest when he was busy. In 1962, Bert and Lillian moved into their new home in Porcupine Plain that they had built themselves with the help of a few friends.
In 1964, they welcomed their daughter, Karen Lynne to their lives. Bert was very excited to finally have a little girl.
Bert continued to build and establish himself in business and in the Community throughout his life. He donated both his time and his services back to the Community. He was a member of the only men's service club in Porcupine, The Lions Club. He donated his Gravel services to several places in the Community. One being the Red Deer Nursing Home when it was being built.
When he wasn't working hard, Bert enjoyed playing hard. He enjoyed dancing, music, socializing with friends, camping, tinkering in his garage, gardening, animals, playing cards and being with his family and great friends.
Another two of Bert's favorite pastimes, were fishing and hunting. He fished year round and hunted for birds and wild game. His interest in fishing took him and Lillian on many annual fishing trips with their friends.
In the early 70’s, Bert and 11 friends gathered together and built "Moose Camp" north of Prairie River. This became his second winter home for many hunting trips and seasons. He was able to put many meals on the table every year by going to Moose Camp. It wasn't only fun for him, but a viable way to feed his family at the same time.
Bert also enjoyed all adventures. He took his wife to Hawaii, where they both caught the travel bug. As every Winter after, till 2002, they went on a Winter holiday somewhere.
Bert retired from Farming and Business in 1993. After enjoying a wonderful retirement, his health started to fail in 2012. He remained at home for several years as the terrible brain disease Dementia slowly took controĺ. In May 2018, he moved to the Red Deer Nursing Home.
Bert was predeceased by his Parents Wassil and Katherine, his sister Anne and her husband Bob Sinton, Sandy Jackson, brother George, brother Raymond and sister Nancy (Larry) Adams. He will be forever loved and remembered by his wife Lillian, his eldest son Steven (Bridget), son Mark (Gail), and daughter Karen (Fred); Grandchildren Rhonda (Wayne) Garrett, Bev (Shaun) Moritz, Dana (KC) Denys, Devin (Kailee) Denys, Arielle (Dwayne) Denys; Great- Grandchildren Alyssa and Riley.
