Obituary for Doris Ethel Brehmer

Doris Ethel Brehmer
Doris Ethel Brehmer (nee Wallace) at the age of 93, passed away peacefully February 24, 2021 in White City, SK. Left to cherish her memory is her son Vance (Darla) Brehmer and grandchildren Amanda and Jarrett; her sister Elsie (Alfred) Kerr; as well as nieces, nephews and their respective family and friends. Doris was predeceased by her mother Dorothea Maude Harley and her father, James Herbert Wallace; and her brother Donald Wallace. Doris was born on January 15, 1928 on a farm near Balcarres in southern Saskatchewan. In 1932, at the age of four, her parents moved 3.5 miles north of Weekes. As settlers, the log house had a sod roof that would dry out in the summer and during rain storms would become saturated and allow water to drip into the inside of the house. She started school at Dunwell which was a short way from her house. She took grades 1-10 at Dunwell. Grade 11 was taken at home through correspondences, but was later able to go to the Hudson Bay school, where she graduated in June 1948. That fall she entered Teachers’ College (Normal School) in Saskatoon. She graduated in June 1949. In the fall of 1949 she took charge of a one-room country school with 20 pupils. She taught there for three years and then moved to Somme, SK to teach grades 5 to 8 with 33 pupils in four grades. In 1956 there was an opening in the Weekes School, so she applied and was accepted. In 1959 a new high school was built so students from grades 9 to 12 moved into the high school from the old building and this left grades 1 to 8 there. Doris was appointed as principal, a position she held for 14 years. Doris taught grades 5 to 6 until she retired in 1985 after just over 35 years of teaching. In 1960, Doris married Alan Brehmer, a local farmer. Their son, Vance, was born in the January of 1969. They lived in Weekes from 1960-1975, at which time they moved their house to the farm 8 miles east of Weekes. Vance married Darla Durgan in 1989. Their first granddaughter Amanda followed in 1995 and grandson Jarrett in 1999. Doris enjoyed most of her retirement years, but sadly in 2012 her husband Alan passed away. Doris was well known for crafting and enjoyed many activities such as beadwork, crocheting, tatting, knitting, haranger, ribbon embroidery, straw weaving, plastic canvas needlework, painting. She loved crossword puzzles and playing cards with her family and was very close with her sister Elsie. She always grew a very big garden and loved to have a variety of flowers. She was an avid bird watcher and would spend time feeding, and watching the birds and the other wildlife that would come into their beautiful farmyard. In August of 2016, Doris moved to the William Albert Care Home in White City, SK to be closer to family and attend to her medical needs. Doris enjoyed social activities at the home and was still very much the school teacher at heart, completing crafts and coloring and various activities. On behalf of the entire family, we would like to say a special thanks to all those that shared in and were a part of Doris’ life
