Obituary for Anna "Annie" Kowalko

Anna "Annie" Kowalko
On January 9, 2021, Annie Kowalko passed away peacefully in Saskatoon at the age of 95 with family at her side.

Annie Kowalko was born on August 21, 1925 in Hluch, Poland to parents Miron and Cecilia Awdiuk. Her mother passed away at age 29 which required Annie to be independent at a very early age. Annie spent her early childhood years in Poland until 1939 when she (at age seven) and her older brother Serge (at age 17) immigrated to Canada. Upon arriving at the port of Halifax, Annie and Serge traveled to Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan.

Annie married Alex Kowalko on August 17, 1947 and settled on what became their homestead, located northeast of Erwood. It was at this homestead where three sons were raised (Dennis, Len and Ken). Both she and her husband enjoyed the farm life, gardening and socializing with neighbours in the area.

Times were often difficult on the farm, but Annie's strong religious beliefs made her a caring, loving and devoted wife and mother who cared for her sons and husband. Her thoughtfulness and unconditional love shone bright. She was a hard worker and a source of inspiration for her sons. Annie participated in the family farm until 1972 when the family farm was sold and both Alex and Annie moved to Hudson Bay.

Life in Hudson Bay brought greater conveniences. Annie enjoyed visiting with friends and sharing in the good things in life. She had a love for gardening and was particular in the arrangement of her plants and flowers. During her time in Hudson Bay, she spent many days at the hospital assisting with the care of her husband.

In 2006, Annie moved to Saskatoon to be closer to her family. She missed Hudson Bay and area, but continued to enjoy life. Annie attended the Church of God in Saskatoon and enjoyed going for her daily walks. Annie resided in Saskatoon until her passing. Annie was a source of inspiration as a grandmother, mother and a devoted wife.

Annie was predeceased by her husband Alex, her parents Miron and Cecilia, and brother Serge. Annie was also predeceased by a sister Anna and two brothers (Slouka and Clem) who had passed away at infancy in Poland. Annie will be sadly missed by her sons: Dennis, Ken (partner Myrna), Len (Terry) and two grandsons (Brent and Bradley).
