Obituary for Harold Ollenberg

Harold Ollenberg
Harold Ollenberg was born on November 1, 1920 on the homestead at Section 35-20-16, SK (near Avonhurst, SK) to the parents of Adolph and Augustine Ollenberg. He grew up on the family farm with his 5 siblings and was the fifth child. His family had come up to Hudson Bay on the train to homestead during the depression and returned to Avonhurst a few years later. As a young man, Harold served for approximately four years in the Canadian Air Force as an airplane mechanic from 1942 to 1945. After which, he married Wilna Watling in October of 1945. This marriage was blessed with four children, Terry, Greg, Mary, and Bob. He farmed for a number of years near his parent’s homestead. In his mid-thirties, he came to know Jesus as his Lord and Saviour. Soon, Harold taught at the Indian Bible School in Fort Qu’Appelle as well as serving on the board. He had a heart for the First Nations people and did missionary work with them. In 1968, Harold came up to Hudson Bay to help his nephew farm and shortly after bought the farm on Loiselle Creek Road and started farming. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed trapping and farming. He started working at the Sask Forest Plywood mill and worked there until he retired in 1986. Harold met Barbara Cleland in 1979 in Saskatoon. The following September 1980, Harold married Barbara. Harold adopted Barb’s youngest child, Nicole. He also gained stepchildren; Brian, Bev, and John. After Harold retired in 1986, they moved into town and he developed a passion for gardening. His vegetable garden soon began to shrink in size to make room for his beloved flowers. He loved Nintendo and he was also found often playing a round of golf before breakfast and another later in the day. He loved gospel music, especially The Gaithers and he played guitar, harmonica, and enjoyed singing. Harold was a very humble man, had a quiet sense of humour and as once described by a friend that he was a charming, quiet, gentle man. Harold loved his family and often was captured in photos with one of the many grandchildren on his lap. Through all these years, Harold was involved in his church and spent hours studying the Bible. Harold was passionate for His loving Heavenly Father and Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and he firmly believed in the grace of God and it was incorporated into his daily living. Harold was an amazing example of God’s grace to others in his own quiet way. His desire was to see all his family in a living relationship with Jesus Christ. He developed his own Bible study pages and would share them with the family and church members.

Harold was pre-deceased by his parents Adolph and Augustine Ollenberg; siblings: Elsie, Athelene, Edward, William, and Arthur; and sweet 10 year old great-granddaughter Kennady Clarke. He is survived by his wife Barbara Ollenberg, children: Terry Ollenberg (Liz), Greg Ollenberg (Nina), Mary Ollenberg, Bob Ollenberg (Cath), Brian Cleland (Betty), Bev Carter (Fred), John Cleland (Jocelyn), and Nicole Brinklow (Chris); 21 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and friends.

There was a private graveside service for the Celebration of Harold’s Life.
