Obituary for
Kathleen 'Kay' Doris Lawrence
Kathleen (Kay) was born on October 14, 1924 at the Kelvington Red Cross Hospital to parents Egnace and Doris Perron. She would be joined nine years later by her younger brother, Norris. Kay grew up on the family farm helping her father with outside chores as she grew older. She took her early schooling at the Pipestone School just west of her farm. Later she continued her education by attending the Sacred Heart Academy in Regina for two years and finishing at Nut Mountain School.
On November 11, 1944 Kay married George Kitar and she moved two miles east to his farm. To this union three children were born- Diane, Warren and Caren. Together they grew grain, a large garden and raised a variety of livestock with many chickens and turkeys every year.
In the early 60's Kay went to work as a store clerk at Pat's Groceries and Meats for three years. Then after taking a secretarial course by correspondence she worked in the doctor's office for sixteen more years. She truly enjoyed this job because it enabled her to meet and visit with people from all over the community. The only downside was Kay's seven mile commute to work everyday during bad weather. A short stretch of road leading from her yard to access the grid road a half mile north was prone to block with snowdrifts and flood badly in the spring from flood waters of the Pipestone Creek.
Kay's marriage to George ended shortly after their son, Warren (Sam) was critically injured in a car accident in 1972. In 1977 Kay married Charlie Lawrence and she continued to farm with him until 1995. After she retired Kay became a R.M. Councillor for her division and was instrumental in having a high grid road built to her home. She joined the Legion Ladies Auxiliary and became a member of the Pasquia Health Care Board. Coming from a Catholic family Kay's faith was very important to her. She was a member of St. Theresa's Parish in Lintlaw for many years and then attended St. Joseph's Parish in Kelvington where she volunteered to be Parish chairperson, a Sunday Mass reader and catechism teacher.
Kay took great pride in her well manicured lawn and flower garden during the summer and would bake (her gooey cinnamon buns being a family favorite), sew, knit, read, and curl during the winter. Kay had a fondness for dogs and cats and had several well-fed German Shepherd dogs that were her companions both inside and outside the house.
Kay's other passion was travelling. In the early years the family would pack up the camping gear every summer and head out on a road trip to visit relatives somewhere or often heading to the Banff or Jasper. Later, she went on a a farm/historic tour of several European countries with her daughter, Caren and enjoyed many trips with Charlie including scenic holidays to Alaska, Hawaii, California, Florida, Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes.
Kay showed determination and a strong work ethic during most of her life but eventually her time on the farm came to an end when her husband developed Alzheimers and her son passed away in 1998. She left the farm life that she loved and moved her house to Kelvington where she resided until 2012 enjoying the friendship of many neighbors on her block and being able to walk a short distance to her nearby church.
As her health declined Kay needed more support so moved to an assisted living facility, the Rose Valley Manor, where she lived a short time until a broken hip required her to go into Kelvindell Lodge. It was her home for the last six years where she was fortunate to receive good care from a kind and patient staff.
Kay was predeceased by her parents Egnace and Doris Perron, husband Charlie Lawrence, son Warren Kitar, brother Norris Perron, sisters-in-law Mary Perron, Irene Lawrence and Mabel Philips, brother-in-law Claude Lawrence and son-in-law Lloyd Walker.
Cherished memories of Kay's life will be fondly remembered by her daughters, Diane Walker and Caren Templeton (Scott), grandchildren-Cheryl Onyskiw (Larry), Clinton Walker (Kim), Kevin Walker (Bev), Katelyn (Franklin) Templeton and Alisa Templeton, great-grandsons Bradley Onyskiw, Justin and Kirby Walker, great great-grandson Nixon Walker, nephew Ken Perron, nieces Rita (Garry) Weaver, Christine (Stan) Patenaude, step-nieces Mary Ann Olson (Keith) and JoAnne Armstrong (Alistair), step-nephews Harvey and Gordie Philips.
