Obituary for Phyllis Elias (Tiefenbach)

Phyllis Elias (Tiefenbach)
It is with sadness that the family of Phyllis Elias announce her passing on September 28, 2008, in the Hudson
Bay Health Care Facility, at the age of 83 years.
Phyllis was born near Balgonie, Sk., on August 1, 1925, to Paul & Caroline (Lindenbach) Tiefenbach. She lost
her mom, when she was only six years old. She often mentioned the hardships that she had as a kid growing up.
She was baptized in the Baptist Church at Edenwold, SK.
Phyllis met John in Regina, the Army uniform hooked her. They were married on September 12, 1943, at
Balgonie, SK. They moved to Smeaton, SK, where they began their married life. They had four children:
Marline, Albert, David, and Peggy. To her surprise, Marline came early, and was born on her birthday. How
wonderful to celebrate your birthday the same day as you Mom.
She was a wonderful homemaker. The cookie jar was always full, and the Cream Puffs and Homemade ice-
cream, yummy. With all the work, she still had time to make homemade skis for her family. Sunday was family
day to ski across the field to Mardell’s to play cards.
In 1952, she lost her son David to Polio, he was only 3 years old. It was very hard on her, but now she will join
him in heaven. She was a member of the Legion Auxilliary, and also a Sunday school teacher in Smeaton.
In 1966, she moved back to Regina, that was when she met Fred Elias. They were married a few years later,
and when Fred passed away she moved back to Hudson Bay, enjoying her Senior’s home. Most Sunday
afternoon’s, she travelled out to play cards and have supper with Larry and Marline. There was no one like her
son-in-law, in her eyes he could do nothing wrong. She was a good mother-in-law, very wonderful.
Her biggest hobby was her greenhouse, and flowers. She loved bingo and going to the Senior’s Club to play
cares, especially when she could give Ernie heck for looking in her hand and then not throwing her the card she
needed.
She loved her grandchildren, and cherished the time she spent with them. She really enjoyed her letters from
Elmer, and would often say we need to pick up the mail, it’s time for Elmer to write. One of her highlights was
going to her great-granddaughter Tanita’s graduation this June, she said her dream came true. Tanita has a
memory of Grandma Phyllis sitting on the couch by themselves, and Grandma telling her life story to her. The
grandchildren when they came back home, would take Grandma for a drink, and she enjoyed that. She enjoyed
having her grandson Russel stopping in to see her in the hospital this summer, and the many visits from May &
Jack, Ernie & Jean, Doreen and her sister Betty, and grandson Russel and Marline having cupcakes with her for
her 83rd birthday in the hospital.
Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, Paul & Caroline (Lindenbach) Tiefenbach, Husband Fred Elias, Sons:
David and Albert Vanalstine, Sisters: Tille Hastings and Frieda Moschansky, and Brothers: George, Jake,
Ralph, and Ed Tiefenbach.
Phyllis has left her family with many fond memories, and they will miss her fun loving spirit and wonderful
sense of humour. She will be lovingly remembered by her Children: Marline (Larry) Koveach of Hudson Bay,
SK, and Peggy (Dave) Martin of Victoria, BC, Grandchildren: Elmer and Ken Lundy, Lee-Ann Hill, Shiela
Agnew, Shane Martin, David, Nicole, Jamie, Matt, and Casidy Vanalstine, Great-Grandchildren: Tamara and
Tanita Hill, Russel Lundy, Molly and Curtis Dlugaj, Great-Great-Grandchild, Kyana Hill, Brothers: Elmer
(Jean) and Eugene (Ann) Tiefenbach, Sisters: Olga Block, Elsie Heywood, Sisters-in-law: Edna and Edyth
Tiefenbach, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
A memorial service was held on Friday, October 3, 2008, at 2:00 P.M., in the Hudson Bay Legion Hall, with
David Silver officiating. The Urn Bearer was Larry Koveach. Honorary pallbearers were mentioned as “All
Those Who Have Shared In Phyllis’s Life”. The memorial guest register was attended by May & Jack Russell.
The eulogy was delivered by granddaughters Lee-Ann Hill and Shiela Agnew. The Hudson Bay Community
Choir accompanied by organist Mary Bober led the congregational hymns. Following the memorial service the
Hudson Bay Legion Auxilliary served lunch in the Legion Hall. The interment of the Urn took place in the
family plot in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Snowden, SK. Memorial donations in memory of Phyllis may be
directed to the Hudson Bay Senior’s Centre, Hudson Bay, SK, S0E 0Y0. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to
Blair’s Funeral Home Ltd., Hudson Bay, SK.
