John “Jack” Lucien Alphonse was born at Hudson Bay Jct. to parents Lucien and Hilda Bayet. Jack’s birth came unexpectedly early at the Desrochers Hotel before the train could take Hilda south to a Hospital. Jack began his schooling in Zenon Park until grade seven, he then attended the St. Boniface College in Winnipeg for a couple of years. He completed schooling in Hudson Bay in approximately 1956. Following graduation Jack attended technical school in southern Saskatchewan. Jack was always fixing things beginning as a child. When he was six, he was witnessed doing repair’s on the thrashing machine. He disliked being away from the farm as a young person and that continued into his adult years. Jack was the only one in his family to return and live at home. He had a love of numbers and was always calculating things; he calculated how many inches he was away from home while he attended boarding school. His grandmother made a thread crochet table cloth and he calculated the length of miles of thread she used. On any trip, he would always be calculating and then bragging about his gas mileage!
Jack loved dogs and had a pet growing up named Jesse. Dogs continued to be a part of the family farm as time went on...Mitzy, Smoky, Sandy, Tiny, and Toby.
Jack had two jobs, he had a successful career as a Journeyman Electrician at Macmillan Bloedel for 30 plus years and paired that with farming in the Etomami district. Jack achieved his dream and built his own house from the ground up in Etomami by the river, just south of Hudson Bay. Jack conquered his addiction and celebrated 40 plus years of sobriety. He was great talker and loved meeting people and was a wealth of worldly knowledge. Jack was also a great dancer!
Family was important to Jack, and family vacations became a staple every summer. Sometimes those vacations were linked to special events like weddings. And as always, Jack was calculating his gas mileage all the way.
Jack’s family extended across Canada and also included the many people he met along the way through years of dedication to helping people achieve their sobriety through Alcoholics Anonymous and the New Hope Group in Hudson Bay.
Jack was predeceased by his spouse Bernadette Fontaine, parents Lucien and Hilda, and his cousin Robert “Cookie” Bayet.
He is lovingly remembered by his children: Katherine (Samuel) Besserer, Thomas Fontaine (Daralynne Stephenson), and Victoria Fontaine; grandchildren: Tyrell Fontaine, Jadyn Fontaine, TY Fontaine and Darian Besserer; step-granddaughter Kayla-Rai Chunyk; step great-grandson Keegan Kishayinew; sisters: Beatrice Cormier and Madeleine Samuda, as well as many neices, nephews, relatives and friends.
