Obituary for Gordon Allen Young

Gordon Allen Young was born August 17, 1933 in Kenaston, SK. He was the second child to parents Charles Milton and Francis Evelyn Young. Gordon first attended schools in Hanley and Melfort before going to school at Blighty when the family moved to the farm, 9 miles north of Somme. He joined the work force at an early age, finding his first job with a saw mill at Reserve. At the time, 21 was the legal age to enter the beer parlor. The server of the Weekes bar would give him the first beer, but then tell him to go play pool. At the age of 17 he went to work for his uncle in Kinley for a year, and at 18 his CAT work began. He first worked in Alberta and then back in Saskatchewan for Morton Construction for 7 years, working seismic in the winter and building roads in the summer.
In 1960 he bought his first quarter of land, and purchased two more quarters in 1962. He now considered himself a farmer!
Gordon met Sheila Watson in the spring of 1955 and were married April 2, 1960. To this union 4 children were born: Richard December/1960, Brenda August/1963, Rodney February/1965, Bryan October/1968.
Gordon was known by his friends and family not only as a farmer, but as a carpenter and mechanic as well. His patience and ingenuity served him well in all of these endeavors. Whether it was working on the farm, restoring tractors or building kitchen cabinets, Gordon did every job with a sense of pride and great attention to detail. He passed on many of his skills, knowledge and work ethic to his children and grandchildren, and always enjoyed working side by side with them on many projects.
Gordon enjoyed sports and attended many baseball games, hockey games and bus trips. He was always active with the Senior Blues hockey team, becoming involved in the early 80's with Rodney, and then later with his grandsons. He started as a coach for a couple of years and managed the team for a time. When his grandson's starting playing, he worked in the penalty box and really enjoyed being back with the team.
Contributing to his community was important to Gordon. He belonged to the Shand Ag Society for a number of years and always enjoyed attending and working at the Shand Fair. Gordon also spent 27 years as a Board member and Chairman of Shand Creek C + D from 1970-1997. He spent 14 years with Provincial Conservation and Development board as a member and Chairman, as well as 6 years on the Water Appeal Board from 2004-2010.
Gordon was predeceased by: Father Charles, Mother Francis, Father-in-Law Endy, Mother-in-Law Beatrice, Brother-in-Laws Stanley Watson and Victor Thack, Son-in-Law Brian Bohachewski, Nephew Douglas Watson, Niece Alison Schekk.
