Obituary for Metro Hilash

Metro Daniel Hilash was born in Vonda Saskatchewan on November 8, 1925 to Daniel and Elizabeth Hilash. In 1930 the family moved from Alvena and settled 8 ½ miles north of Porcupine Plain along the Red Deer River where they began making their new home.
Dad attended the Spruceview Country School and helped on the farm. He went away for one winter to work on the railway in B.C., building bridges. That spring he came home and decided to farm.
In October of 1957 Dad married Stella Sushyk and they began a new life. Together they raised two sons, David and Donnie, and provided a good life for their family.
Besides his family, Dad's other passion was playing the guitar and violin. At the age of 18 he was self taught and his brother Tom who also played the violin joined up with the Holinaty boys and began playing music at school dances. A few years later Ted & Raymond Dielschneider joined their band. Calling themselves "The Westerners" or "The Twilight Ramblers", for 35 years they played together at weddings and dances.
Dad loved company and didn't need any encouragement to bring out the guitar and entertain, whether it was on a Sunday afternoon in the summer or on a quad ride to Nick & Steve's. If there was a guitar around, Dad was sure to be playing it.
In 1985 Dad retired from farming. After that he and Mom spent time together, gardening and selling produce at the Farmer's Market. Mom and Dad loved ice fishing in the winter, playing cards with the neighbors, picking morels in the spring (although neither of them would ever reveal their secret "picking spots", and going on quad rides in the fall. Dad loved barbequed steak … his favorite line was "gee I wonder what the poor people are eating".
Dad suffered a stroke in 2007 and never fully recovered from it. Two years later in 2009 we lost Mom to cancer, a terrible loss that we are certain he felt every day until his passing. He was able to stay on his own on the farm and then in town for a couple of years but eventually he needed more help and he relocated to the Porcupine Nursing Home.
Metro was 91 when he passed away peacefully on Monday February 20th at the Porcupine Nursing Home. He was predeceased by his wife Stella, father Dan, mother Elizabeth, sister Zenoria and brother Tom. He is survived by his two sons David (Sheryl), Donnie (Loretta) and five grandchildren, Justin, Jeremy, Jenna, Christopher and Stephanie as well as one sister Mary.
We are all going to miss Metro very much. He was a kind and respectful husband, father, brother, son, grandfather and friend. That said he's now found his way back to Stella and for that we are all grateful. If there's a guitar up there he's probably already playing it and I'm certain Stella's already pouring him a vodka and Pepsi, no ice.
