Obituary for Louis Block

Louis was born in Indian Head, Saskatchewan on February 27, 1939 to Emil and Martha Block. He was the eighth child of 11 and a twin to Herman. He grew up on the family farm south of Indian Head and attended Fair Play rural School.
He arrived in Hudson Bay as a young man in the late 50s where he worked clearing bush and fighting fires with his caterpillar. He married Carol Bruce on June 20, 1963 and they would have three children (Linda, Mark and Lucas). Louis and Carol moved around to various communities where Louis worked clearing land. Linda arrived in 1963 while they were living and working in Melville. Mark was born in 1965 in Hudson Bay and he was the New Year’s Baby for that year and Luke was born in Indian Head in 1974.
Louis soon moved on to operating a crane for ConForce Structures. Some of the impressive projects he worked on included the building of the Gardiner Dam, the Shand Power Station, the bridge at North Battleford and water/sewer infrastructure for the Town of Hudson Bay. He even assisted with repair to the Albert Street Bridge in Regina.
Louis’ love of farming led them back to Indian Head in 1968 where they purchased a small farm. It was time for them to put down some roots and enrol Linda in school. Louis was no stranger to hard work but it began in earnest as he worked as a crane operator during the week and farmed evenings and weekends.
In 1982, the family returned to Hudson Bay (with the exception of Linda who was out on her own) so that Carol could be nearer to her parents and siblings and so the Louis could farm.
Louis made many valued friendships over the years and many good times were had fishing, snowmobiling and quadding. In particular, he loved to fish at Armit Lake and Reindeer Lake. He was a compassionate animal lover and an avid birdwatcher. He was a gifted mechanic, welder, farmer and gardener.
After Carol passed away in 2007 his family and close friends became so important to him. He treasured his time with all.
Louis was predeceased by his grandson Andrew, his wife Carol, parents Emil and Martha, and brothers Sigmund, Edmund and Arnold.
He is survived by daughter Linda (Mitch) McAdam and their son Matthew; son Mark (Lynn) and their children Anita, Clay and Shelby; and son Lucas (Susan) and their son Bobby; and his siblings: Alma, Edith, Walter, William, Herman, Marilyn and Helmut.
