Obituary for Gladys Geraldine Guderyan (Dedio)

Gladys Geraldine Guderyan
December 10, 1940- December 12, 2012

With great sadness the family of Gladys Geraldine Guderyan announce her sudden passing on December 12, 2012.
Gladys is the younger of two daughters born to Michael and Mary (Chornook) Dedio. She was born on December 10, 1940, at the family farm (NE 9 35 32 W1) in the Maybridge district, north of Pelly SK.
She started school at the age of five and completed her Grade XII at Pelly High School. In 1960, she graduated from Regina Teachers College and she received her Bachelor of Education degree in 1982. She had a long and productive teaching career of some 30 years in the following communities: Pine House Lake (Northern Saskatchewan), Norquay, Goodeve, Semans, Kamsack, Melville, Hudson Bay, Yellow Quill and more recently, Red Earth where she was teaching at the time of her passing.
Above and beyond her teaching duties, she also implemented school lunch programs and spent many late nights preparing lunches for these programs. While at Stewart Hawke she developed an Outdoor Education Program, which was later adopted by the Batoche and Duck Lake communities and was used by students across Saskatchewan, she was very proud of this program. To date many of her former students still speak highly of her and the lasting impression she had on them.
Gladys married Michael Korneychuk in 1958. In time, they became parents of their son Kyle.
In 1970, she married Ernest Guderyan of Hudson Bay, and together they became part of the Hudson Bay community. Their family included two sons: Clinton and Kristin, and a daughter, Glenda. Gladys took time off from her career to raise her children. Soon after, she was back in the classroom sharing her knowledge with students and making a positive difference at each school. Gladys formed many new friendships in all the communities where she worked and touched the lives of many students.
Although teaching was her career, Gladys also worked in health care. She was employed for more than 20 years by the Hudson Bay Ambulance service, and since 1997, taught a variety of first aid and emergency care courses. While raising her children she still kept busy by driving school bus and handivan.
Gladys was a sports fanatic. She supported and encouraged all her children to excel in hockey, figure skating, and curling. She was interested in all sports activity whether it was watching the event on TV or being actively involved in the sport itself. She was a great fan of Canadian curling. In many sports she knew more facts and figures than the broadcasters did. She was a huge supporter of local hockey and figure skating, where, for many years, she was in demand as a figure skating judge.
Gladys was very involved in her community: Boy Scouts of Canada (30 yrs), founder of the first dance school in Hudson Bay (formerly known as KCKG School of Dance), leader of Hudson Bay 4-H Club, Treasurer of the Band Association, Coordinator of the Minor Hockey Association, and member of the Hudson Bay Woodlander Singers and the St. Dominic Church choir. In addition, she served as Chair for the Northeast Council on Alcohol & Drug Abuse (3 years), Counsellor for Northeast Crisis Intervention Centre (2 years), a founder of the first Hudson Bay Care Cooperative, and a member of the Recreation and Library Board in Hudson Bay.
Gladys was very generous and caring with her children and grandchildren and always put their needs in front of her own. She always took the time to “check-up” and keep in touch with them. Gladys ensured her children and grandchildren were able to be involved in any activity they wanted and even some activities that we did not volunteer for . These were great life lessons which we realized the importance of, later in life.
Gladys loved the outdoors and gardening was one of her passions. She was a keen believer in recycling and went to great lengths to protect the environment, even if it meant getting her daughter Glenda to take plastics to Edmonton to recycle. She loved watching the afternoon soaps on TV and she enjoyed lively discussions on politics or any matter that was of current interest.
She was predeceased by her parents Mike and Mary Dedio. She will be dearly missed by her husband, Ernest; son, Kyle (Susan) Korneychuk and their children Matthew and Ailey; son, Clinton (partner Becky Didluck) and his children Courtney and Taylor; son, Kristin (Chera) and their children Talan and Brielle; and daughter, Glenda Guderyan.
